Support Berkhamsted

scroll down

Berkhamsted is not a school with significant endowment income and past major developments have been funded through fees, donations, appeals and sound financial management. Two elements are crucial to realise any vision – people and money. We are proud of the commitment of our people – Governors, senior management team, faculty and staff, parents, friends and OBs, in helping us provide the funds for both development projects and Scholarships and Bursaries.

Since 1541 for boys and 1888 for girls, the School has provided education for children from Berkhamsted and the surrounding area. It has also been a school for children from all over the world.

Famous pupils such as Clementine Churchill, Graham Greene and Sir Robin Knox-Johnston are celebrated alongside Berkhamstedians who have been at the forefront of exploring the earth’s remotest places, advancing scientific and medical knowledge, decorated in the service of their country, nationally and internationally respected leaders in business, politics, finance and the law.

Today, Berkhamsted achieves impressive public examination results, ensuring that leavers have exciting university and career opportunities. This is only part of the Berkhamsted education which also embraces excellence in the creative arts, sports and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

This is achieved in a stimulating learning environment combining single-sex and co-education. Berkhamstedians leave as able diverse and enterprising young people, eager to take on challenges and keen to contribute to their communities and the wider world.

Looking to the future, the vision is: “To be the first choice independent school in the area for families seeking educational excellence.” To achieve this vision requires continuous investment in new and up-to-date resources; this has been done through the opening of the Knox-Johnston Sports Centre in April 2004, the state-of-the-art Chadwick Centre in 2008 and the new Nash-Harris building at Kings in September 2011 and, more recently, the stunning new David Case Pavillion at Chesham Road Playing Fields.

Annual giving and the Peter Gibbs Science Scholarship

Peter Gibbs was a former pupil and schoolmaster of Berkhamsted School who dedicated his life to Berkhamsted School. He was revered for his wealth of experience and his knowledge of the history of the School, and also for his acute mind and wonderful sense of humour.

It is hoped the appeal will enable the Peter Gibbs Science Scholarship to be self-funding, in perpetuity, and that in this way Peter’s legacy will always be remembered by future generations. In memory of Peter, an appeal was launched to fund a special full Science Scholarship. This is offered to a student entering the school in the Sixth Form who is aspiring to study Science or Medicine at university.
